Unique Ancient Three-Headed Eagle Pendant Discovered In Finland: A Symbol Of Three Different Human Souls

Ellen Lloyd - AncientPages.com - An amateur archaeologist in Finland has made an extraordinary discovery of a three-headed eagle pendant on Pohdonsaari Island. The pendant is from the Iron Age and is most likely a ritual object. According to archaeologists, the eagle’s three heads may represent three different human souls.

Although Reijo Hyvönen has previously discovered many valuable ancient objects with the help of his metal detector, this recent discovery made him more or less speechless.

The small Pohdonsaari Island is located in the middle of Lake Laukko. According to an ancient legend Pohdonsaari was once a place where chief of Pirkanmaa, Matti Kurki, had a duel against giant  Novgorod's hero Pohto. He won it and the king of Sweden awarded to him with ownership of the manor house of Laukko.

When Reijo Hyvönen went closer to the beach, his metal detector indicated a discovery of silver or bronze. He examined the area and found the three-headed eagle hidden under a rock.

The pendant has been studied by archaeologist Kalle Luoto who point out this is an important archaeological discovery. Luoto thinks the pendant was an object used in an ancient ritual process. The three eagle heads can symbolize three different human souls.  It is possible the pendant was sacrificed to help the deceased on his journey into the afterlife. Over the years, ancient beliefs about the soul have reflected our ancestors view of what happens after death.

The double-headed eagle is an ancient symbol found in many corners of the world, but the three-headed eagle does not appear often. Never before has a discovery like this one been made in Finland.

The pendant was in a good shape when it was discovered. It has been preserved and will be studied in more detail.

There are thousands of grave mounds from the Bronze and Iron Age in Finland that are still unexplored. Many more ancient secrets might hopefully be brought to light in the near future.
