Mysterious Fontainebleau Forest – Home To A Lost Civilization
Ellen Lloyd - AncientPages.com - Did an ancient, unknown civilization once inhabit the French forest of Fontainebleau?
Who made the strange carvings discovered on the walls in the narrowest caves? Who were the mysterious beings with three fingers depicted on ancient rocks in the forest?
Who were the authors of the mysterious and undeciphered script found in ancient tombs deep in the forest?
Forest of Fontainebleau- Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, 1830
The Fontainebleau forest is located approximately 60 km southeast of Paris. It has an area of 280 km² and is one of the largest and most beautiful forests in France.
Today, the wonderful and fantastic landscapes of the forest are the reason why this place has become a popular tourist attraction. At the weekend, the forest of Fontainebleau is visited by thousands of people who want to escape the capital, take a stroll, and enjoy the beauty of nature.
However, in ancient times, the situation was different. The forest has a long history.
There are many very large boulders in the Fontainebleau forest.
The known existence of Fontainebleau forest dates back to around the year 1000. For thousands of years, this old forest was more or less isolated from the outside world. Few people, except some criminals, had the courage to enter the ancient "forest of Beer", the old name of the forest. Even criminals hesitated to enter this mysterious place, but its dark, narrow caves and tall, old trees offered a perfect hiding place for escaped prisoners and outlaws.
Ancient Legends Tell Fontainebleau Forest Was Haunted
According to legends, the forest was haunted by a mysterious group of beings.
People believed that the Large Huntsman or the Black Hunter guarded the Park and challenged anyone who tried to pass through. They were always accompanied by a pack of vicious dogs. These legends frightened away visitors. It led to that the fauna and flora and the entire forest remained mostly unexplored. Ordinary people did not visit the forest, not by day and certainly not by night…
Mysterious Ancient Carvings of Unknown Beings
A large number of curious and unexplained inscriptions, drawings, and signs have been discovered in caves and on stones in the forest of Fontainebleau. These ancient depictions cover more than 2,000 km².

Some of the drawings represent remarkable beings who have rectangular bodies, no neck, hollow eyes, and a U-shaped nose. In many cases, their legs are missing and they have only three fingers!
Undeciphered Ancient Symbols Of Puzzle Scientists
The drawings in the forest of Fontainebleau are accompanied by a large number of undeciphered symbols. It is very difficult to determine the age of the mysterious signs carved on the walls.
Archaeologists have discovered crosses, circles, lines, and structured patterns, which all appear to be of prehistoric origin.
Many ancient unknown symbols have been discovered hidden on rocks in the Fontainebleau Forest.
A number of the ancient symbols and signs were carved very deep on stones and cave walls in the most difficult accessible places.
In some cases, the cave's passage was so narrow that researchers were only able to press one arm inside to touch the net-shaped engraving. Why would someone carve a symbol or a sign that no-one else can see? The true purpose of these ancient signs and symbols remain a mystery.
Traces Of A Thousand Year Old Unknown Lost Civilization
Did an ancient, now lost civilization once inhabit the forest of Fontainebleau? Archaeologists and other scientists who studied the ancient rock carvings have reason to believe that people lived in some of the forest's caves thousands of years ago. It would mean that the forest is older than previously thought and that we have stumbled upon traces of a lost civilization.
The ancient history of the Fontainebleau forest is neglected.
At the beginning of the sixties, Robert Gonzo, an amateur archaeologist discovered Neolithic tombs in the middle of Fontainebleau. One of them is located on giant blocks. It is unknown whether the blocks are natural or deliberately set up by prehistoric people. Inside the tomb, Mr. Gonzo found several small stone sculptures and tablets.
Some scientists quickly labeled the stone sculptures as natural formations and the case was closed. The tablets, however, were more interesting and puzzling to the researchers who examined them. The tablets were covered with ideograms which indicate a writing system.
This means that an advanced civilization capable of writing did inhabit Europe long before it is commonly accepted by traditional historians.
Obviously, we can not claim with complete certainty that the ideograms carved on the tablets discovered in the forest of Fontainebleau are in fact part of an ancient unknown script. However, based on other ancient discoveries in Europe, like the Tartaria Tablets and the Vinca symbols we do have the right to maintain it is possible that an ancient, unknown civilization, capable of writing inhabited the forest of Fontainebleau thousands of years ago.
Some of the rocks in the forest of Fontainebleau depict animals that do not belong to this geographical region.
Here, we can find stones that are shaped to represent an elephant, a seal, and a bird of prey. There are also large stone sculptures that depict people and you can clearly see a face!

Of course, the question remains - are the stone sculptures in the forest of Fontainebleau natural formations or sculptures made by a mysterious civilization that wanted to memorialize the animals they witnessed in their everyday life. Did this unknown race make stone sculptures in their own image?
Someone lived in the forest of Fontainebleau thousands of years ago. Someone made carvings of strange, undeciphered symbols and alien beings with three fingers. Someone wrote tablets that we cannot decipher to this day…
Who were these people? Where did they come from? Why did they disappear?
The truth is, the history of the Fontainebleau forest is neglected and this ancient place deserves more attention. The forest of Fontainebleau still waits until we discover its true past.
The ancient secrets of the lost civilization that once lived here are carved on the old stones and cave walls.
No-one can tell us the identity of the mysterious race that inhabited this region.
There are no witnesses left… except for the old trees and the rocks.
