Jan Bartek - AncientPages.com - A mysterious ancient stone structure was discovered while laying a fiber optic cable in Torreano, a town of 2,060 inhabitants in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, in the province of Udine, in northeastern Italy.
The discovery was publicly reported by Ivano Dorbolo, an appreciated designer, scholar of history and archaeology, and administrator of the group " Valli del Natisone - Investigations and archaeological investigations."

“In recent days, this strange stone artifact has emerged during the excavations for laying the optical fiber. The works were immediately stopped, and the archaeologist, who constantly follows the construction site, immediately notified the Regional Superintendence," Dorbolo told the Stile Arte News.
After examining the photos, Dorbolo received, he went to the site eager to find out whether this rectangular structure could be an ancient burial. Dorbolo spoke to an archaeologist who was investigating the site and the baffling ancient stone find. Still, there were no burial traces, only the presence of muddy ground, typical of watercourses.
The nature and purpose of this ancient stone structure remain a riddle, but there are some theories. According to Dorbolo, one possibility is that this was a causeway constructed to allow carts to pass through an ancient water course that flowed through the structure.

“In all likelihood, it should therefore be an old vehicular crossing, probably built to cross an ancient stream, which must have flowed under the current asphalt road. It is very difficult to date this discovery. Still, given the weight and dimensions of the large stones used, it must certainly have been important and not simply a crossing agricultural work of some farmer," Dorbolo said.
Considering scientists did not find any ancient artifacts in the vicinity or anything else that could be subjected to radiocarbon dating, one must admit it is impossible to say what purpose the ancient stone structure served in the past.
