Magical Dinas Emrys: Legendary Battle Of The Dragons And Merlin’s Hidden Treasure
Ellen Lloyd - AncientPages.com - Legend whispers of Merlin's secrets hidden within a cave at Dinas Emrys, nestled in the majestic mountains of North Wales. This ancient site, steeped in myth and legend, also holds significant historical value. Known as Dinas Affaraon or Dinas Ffaraon (Fortress of Pharaoh) in Medieval Welsh literature, its original name, Dinas Emrys, echoes through time.
This picturesque location intertwines with tales of dragons, Arthurian legends, Druids, and pivotal historical events. Some narratives suggest it harbors a mythical city imbued with higher powers. The remnants of an Iron Age hillfort still stand today. What role did this structure play? Some historians propose it was once a castle constructed by Llywelyn the Last (1223–1282), Wales' final prince before Edward I's conquest.
The castle may have served as a sentinel over the road to Snowdon's mountain pass. Its formidable stone walls ranged from 2.5 to 3 meters thick (8 to 10 feet), and archaeological findings indicate Roman-period habitation on this pre-Roman site.
Within Dinas Emrys lies evidence of ironworking alongside an intriguing pool, a feature mentioned in tales involving Vortigern and dragons. The national flag of Wales bears a red dragon often linked to King Arthur’s battles and other ancient Celtic leaders.
Some interpret the Red Dragon as representing Vortigern’s people; others, like Geoffrey of Monmouth, viewed it as foretelling King Arthur’s arrival. Interestingly, King Arthur’s father, Uther Pendragon, translates to 'Dragon's Head.' Yet, the Red Dragon traces its roots back to Roman times.
Merlin, a legendary wizard from Arthurian lore and medieval Welsh poetry, spent time at Dinas Emrys; some are convinced he buried treasure at this magical site. Let us travel to this beautiful place where history and legend meet.
