Sculptures Of Kybele, Athena, Hekate, Apollo Unearthed At Hellenistic Site Of Pisidia Antiocheia, Turkey

AncientPages.com - Pisidia Antiocheia was an important center of early Christianity revealed that the settlement was occupied since the Neolithic age. Long-term excavations have been conducted in the ruins of this Hellenistic city, located in Isparta Province, Turkey.

The city’s original inhabitants used a large degree of city planning and that the location might have been one of the first in the area to build according to a grid model.

Pisidia Antiocheia had also water and sewage systems and used the floor heating system.

Now archaeologists report new discoveries in form of five intact sculptures of gods and goddesses Hekate, Kybele, Athena and the gods Men and Apollo) unearthed in one of the previously unearthed prestigious chambers, known as the Men sanctuary  of Pisidia Antiokheia.

“All the gods of Greek, Roman and Anatolian Pantiona were brought together to create a cult," excavations head Professor Mehmet Özhanlı said.

The local Anatolian god Men is on an altar in the center of the other gods, in front of Kybele and Apollo. Next to Men is Athena. This is the first time in the history of archaeology that these gods have been found together in a prestigious chamber. That is why this year’s excavation works present very good data about ancient beliefs in the area,” he said.
